Chinwe’s monotypes were produced at the Goldmark Atelier Press. A screen mesh and frame were produced for each picture subject. Chinwe then painted the image using a variety of printing inks directly onto the screen. The image was then transferred on to a sheet of paper by pulling a rubber blade (or squeegee) across the screen, forcing the inks through the gauze on to the paper below, thus creating a unique image. Chinwe then painted a new picture over the ‘ghost’ of the previous image on the screen, which was then printed on to a new sheet of paper. This process of painting the image on to a screen and then transferring it to paper was then repeated until the series of images was complete.
Monotype refers to the production of a single unique print which are not editioned in the same way that a lithograph, etching or lino print would be.
In this process ink is drawn or painted directly onto the plate and can be wiped off, scratched into and manipulated in lots of different ways. The image is then transferred by putting a sheet of paper over the plate and running both through a press..Monotype "ghost", which is the image left on the plate can be printed again or the plate repainted for a new print.
